Nick Faldo was in Denmark last week visiting Faldo Design’s first golf course project in Scandinavia – Ledreborg Palace, near Copenhagen. The company is designing an 18-hole ‘championship standard’ golf course, one which the six-time Major winner believes has the potential to become recognised as one of the finest new courses in Europe.
When it has been completed, golfers visiting the course will be in very select company for the 18th century Palace at Ledreborg is a well-known historic landmark and remains the residence of an aristocratic Danish family. The stunning building and sumptuous grounds will certainly lend an elegant ambience to the development and help make for a unique golfing experience. The site is also very interesting from a topographical perspective, gently (and sometimes dramatically) undulating throughout. The natural contours of the landscape will encourage the subtle sculpting of a challenging and very engaging golf course.
Faldo, on site to finalise the routing of all eighteen holes and to add his own keen sense of strategy to the layout, said, “I’m really excited about working at Ledreborg Palace and we had a very productive time during my visit. It’s such a beautiful setting and this is precisely the kind of design project that inspires me. The terrain is near perfect from a design point of view in that it affords an almost instinctual route across the eighteen holes. We are aware that this is a highly sensitive and historically important site and our design will blend very comfortably into the existing landscape – in fact, I would say that it’s more a case of ‘finding’, rather than creating this golf course.”
Ledreborg Palace joins Faldo Design’s burgeoning collection of high quality international projects. The company has gained a reputation as one of the most sought after in the industry and Faldo’s own wealth of experience as a player and legendary strategist are clearly identifiable within his design work. Ledreborg Palace promises to be a very strong addition to the Faldo Design portfolio.
