Faldo design sees Portuguese potential

12.10am 9th August 2006 - Course Development

Nick Faldo was in Portugal to continue work on Faldo Design’s eagerly anticipated first project in the Algarve, at Oce®nico Developments’ Amendoeira Golf Resort, near Silves. Faldo was on site to oversee the ongoing construction work and to add his own strategic refinements to the 18-hole, championship standard layout.
Faldo commented, “This project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve and, with so many courses in the region, that’s no mean feat. There’s a real feel of Arizona about the site and I am confident it will emerge as one of the best examples of a desert-style course in Europe. As with any of our projects, I’m sure that our design at the Amendoeira Golf Resort will offer visitors an exceptionally enjoyable golfing experience – and one that is completely unique.”
Amendoeira Golf Resort will incorporate two 18-hole layouts (the neighbouring course is being designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr) and a golf academy alongside luxury accommodation. The resort will also feature an extensive range of sporting and leisure facilities, including an international standard tennis club and a 5-star health and beauty spa. Work on the Faldo Design project is scheduled for completion in 2007 and the company predicts that the course will become recognised as one of the finest new layouts in continental Europe.
Simon Burgess, Oce®nico Developments’ director, commented, “The interest we’ve had in Amendoeira from both UK and Irish investors has exceeded our expectations, underlining the demand that exists for high quality golf resorts in the less developed areas of the Algarve. The quality, location and facilities of Amendoeira are undoubtedly among the best in Portugal, with Nick’s involvement helping establish it as an exclusive golfing experience in both the Algarve and Europe.”
Amendoeira sits well within Faldo Design’s growing portfolio of projects on a global scale. In Europe alone the company is working in locations as diverse as Iceland, Cyprus, Denmark, Turkey, Ireland and Russia.
