Budding golf pros at a top independent sports academy are raising their game with a state-of-the-art indoor putting green from Huxley Golf, the specialist supplier of premier all-weather surfaces for golf and official supplier to the PGA.
The three-hole installation inside the golf academy at Millfield School in Street, Somerset, is the first Huxley Golf indoor facility of its kind at a British school.
Thirty-two golfers aged 13 to 18, including six girls, are using the green to practise tournament standard short play under the coaching of PGA professionals Karen Nicholls and Stuart Wells.
Karen, the school’s Director of Golf, said: “Huxley Golf have provided a top-quality PGA standard putting green which we can use the whole year round regardless of the weather. If you can practise your putting stroke on a consistent and pure surface your game is bound to improve considerably. The pace and quality of the Huxley surface is a big advantage and the only maintenance it requires is brushing. We are really pleased with the green.”
Paul Michalis of Huxley Golf West said: “Millfield School is synonymous with golfing excellence and so naturally requires the highest quality tuition and practice facilities. With the Huxley Golf putting green, the Millfield staff and pupils can rely on a superb and realistic ball roll all the time.”
A number of pupils using the 15 ft by 8ft Huxley green are in the England schools team. They include Sophie Keech, 13, from Lyme Regis, who plays off a handicap of 3. She is a Dorset County Ladies Team player and was a member of the England Schools U18 Team during the summer.
Millfield, which has 1,250 pupils including 800 boarders, offers one of the most extensive ranges of sports facilities of any school in Britain. It established its golf academy in 1998. Students enjoy an outstanding golf coaching programme based around putting greens, a 350-yard driving range and a nine-hole golf course.
Huxley Golf provides premier all-weather surfaces around the world. Clients include training and coaching establishments, golf resorts, ranges and academies as well as many well known golf courses including several Open Championship and Ryder Cup venues.
