Heritage Golf Group, a leading owner and operator of private country clubs and upscale daily-fee golf courses across the US, has acquired the historic Colonial Country Club located in Memphis, Tennessee, bring its portfolio to 43 clubs across the country.

Colonial Country Club is home to a nationally recognized 18-hole championship course — the South Course — formerly named one of Golf Digest’s Top 100 Historic Courses in the US. The South Course has hosted more than 30 PGA Tour events, including the FedEx St Jude Classic, which has crowned some of the game’s all-time greats including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Lee Trevino.

In addition to its iconic course, Colonial features an expansive practice facility with a full-length driving range, two Bermuda grass putting greens, and a short game area. Members also enjoy six Har-Tru tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a fitness center, and a 35,000 sq ft clubhouse.

The club has also been the site of some of golf’s most memorable moments, including President Gerald Ford’s famous hole-in-one on the 5th hole, quickly dubbed the ‘Shot Heard Around the World’, and Al Geiberger’s record-breaking round of 59 during the 1977 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic.

“Acquiring such a historically significant club in a dynamic new market for us is incredibly exciting,” said Eric Boberg, Executive Vice President of Operations at Heritage Golf Group. “Colonial has a strong reputation in the game of golf, and we’re honored to carry its legacy forward while introducing a new era of elevated member experiences.”

Heritage Golf Group has immediate plans to implement a comprehensive multi-million dollar capital improvement plan aimed at reimagining and revitalizing the clubhouse, dining venues, lifestyle amenities, and overall member experience.

“Colonial is home to one of the most iconic courses in the region and we see incredible potential to elevate the rest of the club to that same standard,” added Boberg. “Our goal is to make meaningful enhancements early on and create a modern, vibrant club that honors its historic legacy.”

The acquisition marks Heritage’s second acquisition of the year, following its purchase of The Club at Cheval in Florida in May. Heritage added several properties to its portfolio in 2024, including Compass Pointe Golf Club and Magnolia Greens Golf Club in North Carolina; Spring Creek Golf Club in Virginia; Oasis Golf Club in Ohio; and Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club and Legacy Golf Club in Florida.
