The Shangri-La Hambantota Resort & Spa in Sri Lanka, which opened in June 2016, is set to open the remaining 9-holes of its 18-hole golf course on 1st October 2016. The course, which has been built on a former sapphire mine, is the first of its kind in the country. Set amid a vast coconut palm plantation, it offers spectacular views and distinctive challenges for both casual and seasoned players.
Designed by Rodney Wright (ASGCA), the beautifully landscaped par-70 course takes players on a memorable golfing journey through three landscaped zones, each with its own unique character: The Coconut Plantation offers lush fairways and challenging bunkers, The Dune Area with its subtle elevation changes gives way to breath-taking view of the Indian Ocean and The Sapphire Mine showcases generous greens with an abundance of water features.
Due to the resort’s dedication to biodiversity and habitat protection, the course development was approached from an eco-perspective by revitalising an abandoned sapphire mine, restoring vegetation, re-introducing birdlife and using salt-tolerant turf.
The resort’s pro shop is equipped with golfing essentials and all golf equipment can be hired. In addition, the resort offers tee time bookings and electric buggies for ease and comfort.
