The first BeaconButler Challenge Cup is a collaboration between the Beacon Centre, the Black Country’s leading sight loss charity, and the West Midlands-based Mark Butler Golf Academy.
The two organisations have been working together for more than two years to help those living with sight loss to enjoy playing golf.
After three successful ‘Introduction to Golf’ courses the charity and the golf academy, working closely with England Golf, have written a golf programme to work with the visually impaired as well as other disabilities.
This will culminate in the first BeaconButler Challenge Cup which will take place on September 24 at the MBGA Golf Academy on Sandyfield Road in Sedgley. It is based on the Ryder Cup format with players split into Europe and America teams.
Beacon Centre’s Innovations Development and Funding Officer Annamarie Balram said: “Our golf programme has been a huge success enabling participants to socially engage with others as well as improve their health and well-being and giving them access to a sport that may have been deemed inaccessible in the past.
“We can’t wait for the Challenge Cup and hope members of the public come along to cheer the teams on.”
A family fun day will take place at the same time as the inaugural BeaconButler Challenge Cup. It will feature Footgolf, kid’s Tri golf, a blind golf challenge and an inflatable up golf tent for people to try swinging a club. There will also be lots of exciting stalls, arts and crafts, a tombola and face painting. Entry is free.
