Swan Golf Designs has been flat out this autumn overseeing the implementation of renovation works at several courses throughout the UK and Ireland. The rain of November and snow of December have been overcome with each golf club being able to continue their preparations for the start of the golfing season in March.
December brought glad tidings with the news that two more golf clubs have appointed SGD to carry out full audits of their courses and to provide recommendations for their improvement over the next ten years. As such we will be visiting Ely City Golf Club and Hornsea Golf Club over the coming weeks to carry out our initial surveys.
Originally opened in 1961, Ely City www.elygolf.co.uk extended its nine holes to eighteen in 1973. The changes were designed by three time British Open Champion Henry Cotton and constructed by Alex Swan, Howard’s father and William’s grandfather. Almost forty years on SGD are looking forward to returning to the Cambridgeshire course and rekindling the family’s long association with the club.
Hornsea Golf Club www.hornseagolfclub.co.uk was established in 1898, although the current course opened in 1908 and was originally designed by Alex (Sandy) Herd. Since its inception the course has benefitted from design input from Dr Alister Mackenzie and James Braid, and remains one of the finest layouts in East Yorkshire. SGD are looking forward to providing the club with guidance on how to keep this high standing as it sets out on its second hundred years.
