CMAE (Club Managers Association of Europe) is delighted to report that their Management Development Programme (MDP) education pathway is now been completed, following the successful delivery of MDP 3 Strategy and Leadership in Edinburgh last week.
The education pathway was kindly gifted to CMAE by the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) back in 2011, when the first MDP took place in Europe; since then 32 different MDPs have taken place covering 4 core topics:
MDP 1 – Club Operations
MDP 2 – Building and managing the club team
MDP – Food and beverage operations
MDP – Golf Operations
The fifth and final course, MDP 3 Strategy and Leadership, completes the pathway that sees club industry professionals across Europe embark on an educational journey to enhance their overall abilities to run successful clubs.
Within this pathway there are two elements of certification: the European Club Management Diploma which is attainable after completing MDP Parts 1 and 2 and the coveted International Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation which is attainable after completing MDP parts 1 – 3 plus either MDP F&B or MDP Golf.
CMAE’s Education Policy Board chairman Kevin Fish describes the journey. “Quite simply, we are changing the perception of club management in Europe, and this educational pathway is at the forefront of doing that. It has only been possible thanks to some fantastic collaboration from our educational partners, a large team of inspiring presenters on the MDP courses and an incredible commitment from club managers hungry for more.
“The residential nature of the courses guarantees that our delegates form lasting bonds that strengthen their position in their clubs and the early statistics from this new “tribe” show that their clubs are benefiting not just financially, but also from the enthusiasm brought back from MDP. We look forward to taking every club manager as far as they want to go in this fantastic industry.”

Koenigsfeld, Senior Vice President, Professional Development of the Club Managers Association of America said of the milestone: “I had the great privilege to audit and approve all the MDP courses throughout Europe from 2011-2015. The education, networking, social bonding and collaboration have always been second to none. We started this journey in 2011 in Stirling, Scotland, and have diligently worked to create and execute all the pre-certification courses that make up the pathway to the global designation, the Certified Club Manager (CCM).
“Never once did Kevin or the team at CMAE waver from obtaining that goal. Of greater excitement, is seeing how the clubs have benefited from the education in which their managers have engaged. Since 2011, we are seeing MDP participants leading clubs more effectively and efficiently which has led to increased member participation, better financial statements and increased member engagement driven by what the membership seeks. This is due to the leadership of the MDP attendees as well as the education and networking offered in CMAE’s courses.
“It took an enormous amount of hard work, resources and energy to complete this final puzzle piece but I believe CMAE now has a comprehensive education platform designed to help the best and brightest club managers lead all club operations. In the 2015/16 term CMAE will deliver another 10 MDPs throughout Europe to over 200 delegates, further reaffirming their commitment to world class education to club industry professionals.
