Members of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects have elected Tom Mackenzie as their new President. Tom took over from Peter Fjällman at the EIGCA Annual Meeting in North Berwick last week and becomes the EIGCA’s ninth President since its formation in 2000.

Tom Mackenzie developed a lifelong passion for golf in Dornoch, Scotland, and it is perhaps not surprising that he was inspired by the great golf course designer Donald Ross, another son of Dornoch. Tom is a partner in Mackenzie & Ebert Ltd, having previously worked for many years with Donald Steel & Company.

Tom has served on the EIGCA Council for several years and, as Chair of the EIGCA’s Environment Committee, he has been instrumental in establishing the ‘Raising the Standard of Sustainable Golf Course Design’ programme, a major new initiative from the EIGCA to educate its members further in sustainable golf course development, building on its close ties with the Golf Environment Organisation.

After his official appointment at the President’s Dinner, which traditionally marks the end of the week’s events, Tom spoke of his pride at becoming President; “It is a real privilege to be the new President of the EIGCA, but it won’t be easy to follow Peter Fjällman. I am delighted that Peter has agreed to stay on the Council for another year to continue the development of our new Five Year Plan.”

“I promise that, over the next two years, I will do all I can to continue to develop the professionalism of the EIGCA for the benefit of its members and the game of golf generally. We have exciting plans for our future and I am looking forward to working with our Council and staff as we put these plans into action.”
