Windermere Golf Club has received an exciting piece of equipment, thanks to the generosity of one of its members. John Hindle, whose wife, Audrey, passed away last year, donated the money for a new greens iron in her memory and it is already hard at work keeping the course greens in first class condition.
The greens iron – affectionately known as ‘Audrey’ – has been used almost a dozen times so far this year and has made a considerable difference to the form of the course. It is hoped that with on-going use, the greens iron will create far better surfaces through the autumn and winter period, when aerating is quite intensive.
“The greens iron is a fantastic piece of kit and we are extremely grateful to John and his family for their donation.” said Windermere’s Head Greenkeeper, John Baines, who leads a team of 6 full and part time greenkeepers. “Audrey was also a member at the club and we have erected a plaque on the greens iron along with her name in commemoration. The greens iron is perfect for use, post maintenance, and will hopefully encourage more visitors onto the course in spring and autumn.
“Because of this piece of equipment, we don’t have to cut the greens as low and therefore, the grass is also healthier. Thanks to ‘Audrey’, the greens at Windermere are far better at this time of year than ever before.”
Windermere Golf Club is situated in the heart of the Lake District, with breathtaking views across the fells and surrounding area. Recently referred to as a ‘miniature Gleneagles’ by the golfing press, the club was established in 1891 and has more than 700 members across all age ranges.
Despite Cumbria’s wet weather, Windermere Golf Club is played all year round, with an extensive ‘greens improvement’ operation undertaken in 2005 at a cost of £750,000 and built to USGA standards.
