Huxley Golf was selected to create a new improved practice tee facility for The Castle Course, St Andrews.
Set on a rugged cliff-top with spectacular views, The Castle Course offers an experience which many golfers aspire to. The newest addition to St Andrews Links, The Castle Course is the seventh course at the Home of Golf and part of the largest public golfing complex in Europe. Demand to play on this elite course is extremely high so maintaining first class facilities is paramount.
The newly improved 12ft x 126ft (3.6m x 38.4m) 14 tee practice area was created using Huxley Golf Premier Tee Turf 2. This high performance all-weather surface provides an exceptional quality, low maintenance alternative to natural grass that’s particularly helpful in high footfall and potentially difficult climate conditions.
With superb ball striking characteristics, its high fibre density enables wood or iron shots to be played directly off the surface or it accepts a tee peg anywhere for complete player flexibility. With exceptional durability and low maintenance requirements, Premier Tee Turf 2 was carefully created to look, feel and play just like natural turf. At The Castle Course, it is expected that more than 800,000 shots will be fired from this surface each year.
Operations Manager at The Castle Course, Kevin Mackay, said: “More than 230,000 rounds of golf are played on St Andrews’ seven courses each year so keeping our course facilities at the highest possible standards is something that’s not taken lightly here. At the same time, there’s a high demand so we always take steps to ensure that our facilities are kept in play with minimal disruption. I was therefore delighted that the upgrading of our practice tee was undertaken to a high standard in just a couple of days.”
He continued: “Contracting a trustworthy supplier along with a superlative product was critical to this project. Through experience and usage in other parts of the business, we found that the Huxley Golf turf provided a consistent low maintenance playing surface which allowed us to have a high usage in a limited area that we couldn’t otherwise provide on grass. As the playability is very similar to a grass tee, golfers always comment positively on its playability and I’m extremely pleased with the result.”
