The Golf Foundation has thanked The European Tour for creating a major opportunity for the leading golf charity during the BMW PGA Championship (22-25 May).

All week at Wentworth Club, Surrey, the Golf Foundation has been given access to run innovative junior golf activity at a specially created stand in the tented village.

The European Tour is one of the Foundation’s strongest supporters and the charity will use the opportunity to showcase its new Junior Golf Passport to visitors to the event.  The Junior Golf Passport is the national learning programme delivered by PGA Professionals in clubs that structures learning, monitors progress and rewards achievement, and is endorsed by the Professional Golfers’ Association.

Children as young as five will enjoy their first golf sessions before going off to watch their golfing heroes in action out on the course. Running from Tuesday, 20 May, to the final Sunday, the Foundation team will welcome a good number of school groups from the local area which are involved with Golf Foundation HSBC Golf Roots activity.

On the Wednesday of the week, the Golf Foundation is also to be given centre stage in Wentworth’s clubhouse, as the charity presents its annual President’s Awards in front of an influential audience from the world of golf.

Nine major awards will be presented to those who have demonstrated their passion for grass roots junior golf: volunteers, PGA Professionals, junior organisers, schoolteachers and local authority officers.

Mike Round, Chief Executive of the Golf Foundation, said: “Our President’s Awards event is a highly popular occasion so it is absolutely fantastic that The European Tour and also Wentworth Club choose to show their support by helping to stage the awards in the famous Ballroom. The staff at Wentworth Club, with their friendly and professional service, help make this a memorable day for all the award winners and the invited guests.

“Our team is also very grateful to The European Tour for offering prime space and facilities in the tented village. Here we can show that golf is fun for visiting youngsters and their families and they can then watch the stars out on the course for themselves. Thanks to The European Tour this will be a very inspiring week for many boys and girls who are brand new to this great sport.”
