Royal West Norfolk Head PGA Professional Simon Rayner increased his profit margin and won £1,000 thanks to a campaign run by Crossover Technologies, a leading provider of retail management solutions for the golf industry.

Through Crossover’s Million Pound Challenge, Simon increased his gross margin value by 15.9% by following the company’s Five Point Plan, designed to help retailers enhance their businesses and increase profit.

Using his Crossover EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) system, with XPos software, Simon, who has been Head Pro at Royal West Norfolk for 14 years, worked through the five points – reduce dead stock, buy better, stock better, motivate staff, motivate customers – with close assistance from Crossover’s team of retail experts.

Over the course of 10 months Simon was able to use XPos to change a number of his business processes. On the one hand, he was able to clear large amounts of ‘dead stock’ by identifying products that were not selling well and needed discounting. Then, by using his XPos reports to identify best selling products, he was able to make more informed decisions when ordering new stock.

He said: “Although Royal West Norfolk is a prestigious and world renowned golf club we have a relatively small shop and very little passing trade as we are at the end of a tidal road. This means we have to be very smart in what we stock.

“The Crossover system has been fundamental in helping us to do that and guiding us to a successful year.”

Through regular contact with Crossover, Simon was able to utilise his EPOS system to its full potential, showing him a variety of ways to enhance his business.

“The system highlighted items we wanted to get rid of because they weren’t selling, as well as showing us where we could increase margin on products that were selling well,” he added. “The system is not just a piece of software, it is an essential business tool.”

Phil Barnard, Managing Director of Crossover Technologies, added: “Our software provides so much more than just a till operating system. We wanted to demonstrate this in our Million Pound Challenge by showing how, by making a few small changes to the way they utilise their XPos software, PGA Professionals could become smarter retailers, save money and increase their margins.

“This was proved by those Pros who completed the challenge, as, on average, they generated an additional profit of £1,500 each, compared to those not taking part.

“By helping people to understand how an EPOS system can improve their sales processes, we are assisting clubs and PGA Professionals to enhance their businesses. Our goal is to help them to make more money, be more secure in terms of less stock, less debt and increased profitability. We exist to help our customers run their businesses better.”
