The annual Mission Hills Golfathon marked a milestone in its history last week as the tournament celebrated its tenth year with a star-studded invitational on the resort’s famed Olazabal Course at Mission Hills Dongguan.
The luxury resort operator is renowned for doing things on a large scale and the Golfathon is certainly no exception as competitors from across the region card a total score from Mission Hills’ 12 courses at its Shenzhen – Dongguan resorts or 10 courses at its Haikou development in the annual event which runs to the end of September.
Conceived to coincide with Mission Hill’s new status as the world’s largest golf club a decade ago, the Mission Hills Golfathon is designed to open to the public of all of the world and now has attracted over 30,000 participants from over 30 different countries including Europe, North America, Australia, South Korea and Japan etc. And with any players for man and woman, ranging from 5 to 80 years of age, it really is open to all.
The invitational tournament was hosted by Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group Tenniel Chu and featured 120 guest players including previous winners and a number of celebrities from Hong Kong and China’s movie scene including Wang Zhiwen, Michael Miu and Simon Yam. In addition to Men’s and Women’s honours, the event also invite a number of special guests including the oldest and youngest competitors, the most participants family as well as the ‘Iron Man’ award, presented to the individual who competes the rounds in the shortest time.
Commenting on the tournament milestone, Tenniel Chu said, “2013 marks the tenth anniversary of the Mission Hills Golfathon which has built a reputation of its own over the years, providing competitors with a true test of golf over an extended period of time and on differing courses. Players from around the world have come to Mission Hills to challenge themselves, compete against one another and enjoy the variety of championship courses on offer.”
The Mission Hills Golfathon uses a Peoria Stoke Play system enabling players without established handicaps to compete with one another over the 10 qualifying rounds. In addition to the coveted trophy, the 2013 Champion will be eligible to play at the Mission Hills World Cup of Golf and will win a romantic getaway package at Mission Hills’ Reciprocal Club – Palazzo Arzaga Hotel SPA & Golf Resort in Italy. All division winners and 1st runners-up will win a Mission Hills Haikou package. Each player will also receive a Golfathon Passport, which will grant them access to all 20 courses as well as the leisure facilities at Mission Hills.
To provide junior and college players with more match experience, Mission Hills Golfathon has special packages for both junior players and full-time college students.
