Praxys makes perfect at Malton & Norton Golf Club

Slender speedwell, common daisy, white clover and chickweed have all been largely eradicated at North Yorkshire’s Malton & Norton Golf Club following two annual applications of Praxys, the powerful systemic post-emergence herbicide from Everris.

First used by course manager, Richard Jacques, in late May 2011 on the 27-hole parkland course, Praxys has both controlled and prevented the return of four tenacious broad-leaved weeds where other products have failed.

“We’ve had a real problem over many years with slender speedwell and daisies infesting the fairways and similarly in the semi-rough with common chickweed and white clover,” explained Richard. “Although other herbicides have produced good short-term control, most of the weeds have returned the following year. This has not been the case with Praxys.”

Having learnt about the product at a turf managers’ seminar presented by Everris at STRI, Bingley, Richard took the decision in 2011 to spray all of the fairways and a large part of the semi-rough across the golf course. The first application of Praxys was made in late May at the recommended rate of two litres per hectare mixed and applied in 200 litres of water.

“Within three weeks the weeds were starting to die back and we saw very little recovery during the rest of last year,” he said. “Although comparatively few problem weeds were evident in spring 2012, I decided to try for a total kill and applied Praxys in early May to all of the fairways again along with spot treatments in the semi-rough.”

The result has seen the eradication on the course of virtually all of the weeds that had previously been giving Richard an annual headache.

“The results have been far better than any other herbicide I’ve used previously on the golf course,” commented Richard. “In the long run, the product’s effectiveness means that we will be saving a great deal of money through a combination of very low dose rates and the removal of the need to continually re-spray.”

“Our location, surrounded by farmland, means that we’ll never totally eradicate difficult weeds, but with the help of Praxys, we will now be able to control them with certain knowledge of success and at much lower cost.”

Praxys is now available in 2 litre as well as 5 litre bottles from Everris distributors. To find your nearest distributor, visit www.everris.co.uk
