Top three rating for Tapton

12.02am 13th February 2009 - Course Development

Tapton Park Golf Club in Chesterfield has been rated as one of the best clubs in the country after being shortlisted for a national sporting award.

The municipal facility, operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), is one of three clubs nationally to be nominated for the GolfMark – Club of the Year Award 2008.

Run by the English Golf Union (EGU) and English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA), the award is designed to recognise outstanding and innovative contributions to junior and beginner golf.

Eight clubs were nominated for the Club of the Year title by the EGU and EWGA, with Tapton Park representing the Midlands, before the best three were put forward for the final shortlist.

It comes as Tapton is currently undergoing a £170,000 refurbishment project including upgrades to the function room, clubhouse, locker room and other course facilities.

Andy Carnall, SIV’s golf manager, said, “This is fantastic news. It not only recognises our high achievement, but the work undertaken and investment made over the last nine months for the benefit of members and players.

“We have a unique set up at Tapton and thanks to our incredibly hard working team we are now brand leaders for junior golf having gone from just 15 junior members to 130 in three years

“Our events programme is booming and we regularly host primary school festivals for hundreds of local children supported by a strong volunteer network. We also have a successful gifted and talented programme.”

The winning ‘Club of the Year’ will receive a selection of Canterbury clothing for the club’s junior section.

They will be presented with the award at the 2009 England Golf Partnership Volunteer Awards on 24th February at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa.
