As Wales prepares to host one of the world’s biggest sporting events, grassroots projects across Wales are benefiting from financial support from the Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund.
The £2million fund was one of the commitments given in the successful bid to host The 2010 Ryder Cup and is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
As the next Ryder Cup host nation, preparations are well advanced for the match that will be played at The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, in October 2010 with one of the main objectives being to ensure that the whole of Wales benefits from hosting the biggest event ever to come to Wales.
The project at Aberystwyth Golf Club has received a grant of £118,763 to build a new 5 holes, par 3 course and to open a space-saving driving range adjacent to the club’s 18-hole course that was founded in 1911. It will make golf more accessible to the general public and encourage new players to the game as well as helping the club’s juniors to improve their games before playing on the main course. The club also wants to encourage pupils at the local primary and secondary schools by offering taster coaching sessions.
Councillor Keith Evans, Leader of Ceredigion County Council, said: “The Ryder Cup coming to Wales in 2010 is already benefiting the whole of Wales and is providing a catalyst for tourism and business as well as golf itself. Grassroots golf is receiving a tremendous boost throughout the region thanks to a range of initiatives and is helping to increase interest among new players as well as providing a lasting legacy for the local community.”
