A degree in Tournament Golf

8.09am 15th August 2008 - Management Topics

Applications are now invited from young amateur golfers with handicaps between +4 and 5 to study at The European Tournament Golf Academy for a foundation degree in tournament golf which starts next month.

This degree has been designed for talented amateurs who want to take their performance and ability to the next level. Recently approved by Plymouth University Academic Standards Board, the degree has been developed by Duchy College and ProJAm to give the amateur a detailed knowledge of the skills required both on and off the course to be a successful tournament golfer.

Neil Connolly, one of the degree tutors, says, “This degree is UK based for two terms with one term in Spain between Christmas and Easter. Our UK base for study is Duchy College and our UK base for golf is St Mellion International Hotel and Country Club in Cornwall. Our Spanish base is La Cala, Costa del Sol.

“This is a two year foundation degree with the option of staying on for a third year to gain a BSc Hons degree. You will study the tournament golf modules in the morning and either practice or compete in the afternoon. Our collegiate team plays in the Premiere Division of BUSA.

“This is the closest thing in Europe to the American Collegiate system, without the level of cost or travel.”

This course has taken three years to develop and can only be studied at Duchy College. There are only twenty four places available. The study topics will include course management, technique development, personal management (for example, time and relationship management), media relations, business management/ sponsorship/ finance, sports psychology, nutrition, golf fitness/biomechanics, performance analysis and golf technology.

The course does not guarantee a place on the professional tour but it will give students an insight into the skills required to play at the highest level and enables talented golfers to stay in education whilst improving their golf game.

The criteria for application include 120 UCAS points or equivalent. Applications can be made through the UCAS website or via the Higher Education administration department of Duchy College on 01579 372286, jane.bryson@duchy.ac.uk
