Arnold Palmer’s Guide to the Majors 2012

6.56am 12th April 2012 - Media

Following its successful launch in the United States last year, Arnold Palmer’s Guide to the Majors is coming to the United Kingdom this summer.

It is now more than 50 years since Arnold Palmer founded the concept of the modern majors during a convivial conversation with a journalist friend on a flight over to Scotland to play in the 1960 Open at St Andrews.

Over the past half-century, the game has mushroomed in importance and popularity, largely due to the ever-increasing public focus on the game’s four Major championships.

In celebration of this flowering tradition, golf fans can enjoy more than 170 pages of articles, including interviews with all the reigning Major champions, previews of this year’s championships and the host courses, historical and reflective features by leading golf writers from both the UK and USA, a statistical roll-call of every Major championship winner since 1860, and a first-person interview with the man himself: Arnold Palmer.

This definitive guide to the four most prominent tournaments in the game of golf – the Masters, US Open, The Open and PGA Championship guide will go on sale in W.H. Smith and other leading newsagents in early June at £5.95 a copy. A copy will also be presented, as part of their paid-for entry, to each person who attends next month’s Golf Live event at the London Golf Club (18-20 May) as a personal gift from Mr. Palmer.

“The game’s four majors are an endless source of fascination to me, and it is with considerable pride that I commend to you a publication bearing my name that will be available at news-stands throughout the country from late May onwards—Arnold Palmer’s Guide to the Majors 2012. The first issue of this publication came out last year here in the US and was deemed a great success, and I’m sure the 2012 edition will be equally compelling.”

Published on both sides of the Atlantic by specialist golf and luxury-lifestyle media house TMC USA, the guide will also be available for purchase through apple on IPAD and has its own website, www.themajorsofgolf.com

Edited by golf industry veteran Paul Trow, the guide’s publisher is  Matthew Squire and the contributors include Bill Elliott, current chairman of the Association of Golf Writers, the BBC’s golf correspondent Iain Carter, Mark Garrod (Press Association), James Corrigan (The Independent), Clive Agran, Andy Farrell, Colin Callander, Peter Swain and Dominic Pedler (all Golf International), Adam Hathaway (Sunday People), Paul Mahoney (Golf magazine), Ben Evans (Golf Business Development), Robin Barwick (SGB Golf), authors Martin Vousden and Ross Biddescombe, and distinguished American writers Bob Harig, Art Spander, Jack Ross, Chris Rodell and Tony Dear.

With considerable in-store promotional budget, the magazine will be clearly available in numerous high-street outlets, predominantly WH Smith and Sainsbury’s. Due to the exploits of four recent Major winners (Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington), the guide will be prominently displayed in Ireland.

In addition, the Swing for Sammy charity, which benefits Cancer Research UK, the Royal Marsden and St Mark’s Hospitals, MacMillan Nurses, and the North London and Weald (Tunbridge Wells) hospices, will receive a percentage of the net copy sales income.
