American billionaire Donald Trump is to give evidence in person at next month’s public inquiry into his plans for a £1 billion golf resort at the environmentally-sensitive Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire.
The plans include two championship golf courses, 950 holiday homes, 36 golf villas and 500 private homes. The inquiry was ordered by Scottish ministers after the original application was rejected by the infrastructure services committee of Aberdeenshire Council.
Mr. Trump said he wanted the public to share his enthusiasm for the plans. “I respect the need for an inquiry and am totally committed to appearing as I really want to see this development come to fruition.
“This development is currently a top priority. The site is very important to me because I just love its natural beauty and because of my connection to Scotland.
“I am confident I will be able to demonstrate my passion for this site on which we want to create a world-class development that works in harmony with the natural environment.
“The inquiry is also a chance to underline the huge benefits our proposals could secure for Scotland.”
Environmental groups and local campaigners have criticized the project because it is on specially protected sand dunes. RSPB Scotland and the Scottish Wildlife Trust want a compromise to protect the site but many business figures back it on economic grounds and the full council has recently overwhelmingly voted to support the Trump application
The hearing will be followed by a final ministerial decision. Sessions will begin on 10 June and are expected to last for three weeks.
