PGA Golf de Catalunya ranked among Europe’s best

PGA Golf de Catalunya, venue for the 2008 PGA European Tour Qualifying School finals, has been ranked among Europe’s top courses by the influential Peugeot Golf Guide.

The luxury 36-hole resort, an hour north of Barcelona and just 20 minutes’ drive from the glorious sandy beaches of the Costa Brava, was awarded a rating of 18 out of 20 for its Green Course, the second highest ranking among all Spanish golf courses.

The Red Course, which will co-host final Qualifying School in November, was also ranked among Europe’s Top 1,000 Courses by the newly published Peugeot Golf Guide.

Juan del Rào, CEO of PGA Golf de Catalunya, part of the PGA European Tour Courses group, said, “The Green Course was voted one of Europe’s Top 10 Courses when it opened in 1999, so we have always known that we have a very special golf course. What’s especially pleasing, though, is that the quality of the Red Course has also now been recognised by the European Tour, which is a fantastic reward for all the investment and hard work that has gone into achieving our target of making PGA Golf de Catalunya a world-class resort.”

The Peugeot Golf Guide team of inspectors, made up of golf professionals, golf course architects, journalists and highly skilled amateurs, visit and review every golf course in Europe in order to update the guide every two years. Inspectors use a proven formula and questionnaire to evaluate three criteria – the golf course, clubhouse and hotel.

PGA Golf de Catalunya’s 6,560-metre, par 72 Green Course, designed by European Tour legend Neil Coles and former Spanish tour professional Angel Gallardo, and which hosted the 1999 Sarazen World Open won by Thomas Bjorn, was awarded 18 out of 20 by the guide’s editorial team, making it the second highest ranked course in Spain.

“It is terrific for PGA Golf de Catalunya to have both courses recognised by the Peugeot Golf Guide. We feel the courses complement each other perfectly and, combined with our outstanding hotel and new clubhouse, which will open later this year, there is an outstanding golfing experience on offer for discerning international golf travellers,” added Del Rào.
