English Women Vote La Manga Club a Success

8.41am 2nd December 2011 - Travel

Lady golfers from across England were generous in their praise of La Manga Club after the five-star resort hosted the second English Women’s Golf La Manga Club Challenge.

Organised by the English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA), the four-day event attracted a bumper field for some competitive off-season golf and plenty of camaraderie away from the fairways.

Judie Lewis, a seven-handicapper, from Hockley Golf Club in Hampshire, took first place in the individual Stableford competition, after carding 63 points from 36 holes on the North Course, to finish two ahead of defending champion Carol Duncumb and Diane Pickersgill – from Rothley Park and Shooters Hill respectively.

Duncumb wasn’t the only familiar name near the top of the leaderboard asRochesterandCobhamPark’s Claire Green successfully defended her pairs title, albeit with a new partner, as she and club-mate Linda Berriman won the fourball betterball contest on the South Course.

And Green and Berriman teamed up with Kam Cheema and Carole Mathieson, of Redlibbets, to play the resort’s West Course and retain the fourball team competition they had won in the inaugural event.

Lewis said: “I am absolutely thrilled, but winning a prize is just the icing on the cake.

“This week has been fantastic, we’ve had a wonderful time. The girls are all very friendly and it’s lovely to play golf with women like this – you become such good friends straight away.

“There’s a great mix of people and handicaps right across the board and we have had great fun. I can highly recommend it.”

EWGA Chief Executive Jim Robinson said: “Once more La Manga Club has hosted a first-class event and everyone had a fantastic time.

“The resort is an ideal venue, with everything you could desire and our members loved the event. The Challenge is extremely popular and can only go from strength to strength.”

The award-winning La Manga Club resort is the EWGA’s official overseas resort partner and provides the perfect venue for its members with a wide array of sports facilities – including three 18-hole championship golf courses, a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa complex. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses, more than 20 bars and restaurants and great entertainment for children.
