New life for an old classic

12.25am 1st October 2007 - Course Development

Calum A. Todd Golf Course Design has been awarded the contract for the re-design of all bunker complexes for the Dumfries and County Golf Club. The work programme begins this year and will be phased over the next four years to be completed well in time for the club’s centenary in 2013.

The decision to construct a golf course on the Nunfield Estate, Dumfries was made at a meeting held in May 1912 with 1883 Open champion Willie Fernie being chosen to design the course.

The quality of the course has been improved by amendments over the years with this trend only being interrupted by the war when golf was relegated behind wheat and potato crops. The subsequent reconstruction allowed the incorporation of new land and the extension of the eighth, eleventh and twelfth holes.

As Calum states, “It’s always an honour to be selected to breath fresh new life into classic old courses, and particularly one that was originally designed by an Open champion. The bunkers have unfortunately suffered from erosion over the years and this has destroyed the original shaping and design intent.

“They have become very difficult to maintain, with the severe high flashes leading to erosion of the faces more or less every time it rains. In fact some of the bunkers represent a health and safety hazard for maintenance staff and golfers and this needs to be addressed.

“The construction work will be done in-house under the watchful eye of the head green keeper, Steven Naggs. CMCR from Larbert will provide the surveying services with turf and materials coming from Rigby Taylor and Tarmac Quarries.”

Other work currently contracted to CATGCD includes the Sunrise Rock Resort on the island of Aruba in the Dutch Antillies, the Minsk Golf & Country Club in Belarus and the Kazaure Resort in Nigeria.
