More than half of the 145 colonial-style homes being built in the current phases of Las Sierras del Desierto at Desert Springs – Europe’s only international award-winning luxury family resort and championship desert golf course in the Almeria region of south-east Spain – have been completed and handed over to purchasers.
Now construction work is being stepped up to keep pace with demand for the two- and three-bedroom townhouses and one-, two- and three-bedroom apartment buildings being developed by the Almanzora Bay Group. Overlooking the resort’s 18-hole Indiana golf course, they occupy the highest point in the 300 hectare (750 acre) leisure resort near Cuevas del Almanzora.
The course was designed by former Great Britain and Ireland Golf team captain Peter McEvoy who was inspired by the desert courses of Arizona and California.At the golf academy the PGA qualified teaching professionals cater for several international teams, the Ladies Golf Union of Great Britain and Ireland, and most of the English County Union’s elite squads. The Almanzora Bay Group, which completed the first buildings at Desert Springs in 2000, has a long-term plan for expansion of the resort which includes another 18-hole golf course, two hotels, shops and restaurants.
A mix of 250 apartments, townhouses, cottages, villas and country houses already have been completed and sold. Celebrity owners include the former England Test cricketer, Ian Botham, who has bought a four-bedroom country villa alongside the seventeenth fairway of the golf course. His friend Daley Thompson, the double Olympic Gold medallist who runs personal fitness training sessions in the resort, also has a home at Desert Springs.
Prices of the new homes in the Las Sierras del Desierto phase currently start at €205,000 for a one-bedroom apartment rising to €345,000 for a three-bedroom home. The prices of townhouses start at €315,000 for a two-bedroom property rising to €435,000 for a three-bedroom home. All the prices include non-resident joining fees for golf club membership which is worth more than €30,000 to a family of four.
