Faldo series heads home

7.00am 20th September 2006 - Sponsorship & Events

As the Faldo Series 2006 draws to a close, the next generation of European champions are heading for the 10th Faldo Series final, to be held at 2010 Ryder Cup venue The Celtic Manor Resort on 4th – 6th October.
A total of 60 players will compete at the tournament, the largest field that the Faldo Series has catered for at a final to date. Aside from the young golfers from the UK that will be attending the tournament – including defending champion Oliver Fisher, the 2006 St Andrews Links Trophy champion; current European Amateur Champion, Rory McIlroy; and McEvoy Trophy winner, Luke Goddard – there will be a number of competitors from as far a field as Iceland, who will be joining their peers at Celtic Manor following the inaugural Faldo Series Iceland championship.
This year’s Faldo Series final will incorporate a number of new features. The tournament itself will now run over two days, with a total of 54-holes over Celtic Manor’s Roman Road course, venue for the European Tour’s Wales Open. A cut has also been introduced following the first 36 holes, meaning that the leading players will now go head-to head for one final round of competition on the morning of 6th October.
Now in its 10th season, past Faldo Series champions include Walker Cup player and European Tour star Nick Dougherty; Curtis Cup player and Ladies European Tour professional Anna Highgate; and the youngest ever Walker Cup player Oliver Fisher. These and many other protà©gà©s have benefited from Nick’s personal advice and experience and all are now role models to the next generation.
Following the launch of the Faldo Mini Series this year, there will also be a number of young golfers, under the age of 11, invited to the final to meet and spend time with Nick Faldo. It is hoped that these young golfers will be inspired by the experience and eventually go on to participate in the Faldo Series itself.
Nick Faldo will host the event. “I’m very much looking forward to attending this year’s Faldo Series final,” he said. “The standard that these young golfers are achieving is very impressive and we hope that we can do our bit to help them to emerge as well-rounded golfers with an appreciation for every facet of the sport. I’m also looking forward to welcoming our international finalists.
“The leading players from this year’s UK final will get a chance to travel to China next year to compete in the final of the recently launched Faldo Series Asia. The fact that we are offering players from such diverse backgrounds the chance to benefit from the experiences that their peers can offer is entirely unique to the Series; I hope that we can continue to develop further opportunities in that same vein for an even broader range of young golfers next season.”
Underwritten by Nick, the Faldo Series is supported by golfsurgery.com, The Celtic Manor Resort, the European Tour, the PGA and The R&A.
