The PGAs of Europe are confirming their commitment to the increasingly-important ‘green’ lobby in the sport, by staging their Annual Festival of Golf 2006, at a new venue in the Murcia region of Spain in November.
As a two-fold illustration of the PGAsE’s support for policies that enhance the local countryside, and encourages its wildlife, the annual international team championship is being staged at a new course that reflects such values. In tandem with the championship, the annual congress will have The Environment of Golf as its theme.
The ITC will be staged on the Roda golf course, designed and created by Dave Thomas in a manner that blends into the existing Mediterranean landscape and vegetation, and coincides with the values of environmentalists.
‘Green’ issues have been an integral part of the planning and development of the Murcia region, as its new golf courses, housing developments and network of fast roads have made it one of Europe’s leading growth areas.
The PGAs of Europe wholeheartedly supports the work of the Golf Environment Europe movement, whose work is outlined on their web site: www.golfenvironmenteurope.org – in which such practices as undue deforestation, the destruction of wild life’s natural habitat, the application of harmful chemicals, the usage of valuable water supplies, and the like, are frowned upon.
The annual congress, spread over two days, will feature specialist speakers on these and allied topics so that they can be debated by delegates from more than 30 member PGAs and other interested parties.
Venue for the Congress is the recently-opened Hotel Santos Nelva, which boasts superb conference facilities and provides the visiting players and officials with the opportunity to assess for themselves the potential of this emerging golfing region that has been described by some as ‘the new Costa del Sol’.
