For a number of years now www.top100golfcourses.co.uk has published Best in State golf course rankings for all US States and these rankings have been an editorial cornerstone for American Golf Digest magazine since the 1980s. The publishers therefore thought it high time to take a long hard look at golf courses much closer to home.
No media publication has ever produced golf course rankings on a county-by-county basis, so Top 100 Golf Courses Ltd of Devon thought that they would lead with another first and start the ‘Best in County’ golf course rankings.
Our initial county focus has been on Devon and Cornwall, not because we have an office in Barnstaple, but because the quality of golf courses in South West England is very high and many great golf courses are simply unknown to thousands of golfers who visit the South West every year.
Many golfers want to play the links courses that are strung out along the Atlantic coastline… Saunton, Royal North Devon, St Enodoc and Trevose are all at the top of must-play lists for seasoned travelling golfers.
Compared to the South East of England, the cost of playing a top ranked South West course represents excellent value. However, these top ranked courses can be too challenging for many golfers and some want even cheaper green fees. But the biggest challenge for visiting golfers, who do not know the area, is finding out which are the best courses to play.
After extensive research, which included gathering all available golf course ranking/rating data and polling literally hundreds of golfers from professionals, golf journalists and amateur golfers, we finally arrived at a best-in-county ranking list for Devon and Cornwall.
St Enodoc (Church course) comes out top in Cornwall and Saunton (East course) is number 1 in Devon. Full details of all the rankings can be found online via the following links:

Top 100 Golf Courses – www.top100golfcourses.co.uk – has independently ranked and rated the best golf courses in Britain & Ireland since 2004. The website is interactive and is dedicated to golf courses. There is also a facility for golfers to post online reviews of the courses they have played based on their experiences. It is these well-written and informed course reviews and the corresponding ratings posted by passionate golfers that really cut to the chase.
