The Scottish Golf Union has announced a major new sponsorship agreement with Magners Irish Cider that will see the leading drinks brand more than double its investment in Scottish amateur golf.
As part of the new deal, Magners Irish Cider will become sponsors of the Scottish Club Golfers Championship, the SGU’s new flagship event for club handicap golfers in Scotland. Magners will also continue its role as one of the SGU’s official partners, as well as sponsoring competition materials for SGU affiliated golf clubs.
Magners Irish Cider is traditionally served over ice in a pint glass, designed to appeal to consumers looking for a refreshing and premium quality alternative to other long alcoholic drinks. Magners is widely recognised as rejuvenating the cider category in GB with cider sales up 10%. As one of the fastest growing drinks brands in the market, Magners is the number one on-trade packaged long alcoholic drink brand in Scotland and the second biggest on-trade packaged brand in the London market in less than nine months.
Magners Irish Cider also has other sporting associations as the Official Team and Shirt Sponsor of London Wasps Rugby and Edinburgh Gunners Rugby and the Official Partner of the Scottish and Irish Golfing Unions.
The Magners Club Golfers Championship is open to all members of an SGU affiliated club who hold a handicap and are aged 18 or over. Local qualifying competitions will take place from April at clubs across the country, with the leading two net scores qualifying to represent their clubs at four regional qualifying events taking place in August at Murcar Links, Lanark, Alyth and Forrester Park. The top 15 clubs in each regional final will qualify for the grand final, to be hosted on 15th September at the prestigious Macdonald Cardrona Golf & Country Club near Peebles.
The SGU expects more than 300 clubs to participate, with around 24,000 club golfers forecast to enter the championship, making it Scotland’s biggest nationally recognised participation golf event.
Maurice Breen, marketing director, Magners Irish Cider said, “We are delighted to be extending our partnership with the Scottish Golf Union to a new level through the sponsorship of the Scottish Club Golfers Championship.
“We have been associated with the SGU since 2004 and in two years our product has become one of the most popular drinks in clubhouses throughout Scotland. We are looking forward to building that relationship further and delivering a fantastic event for Scotland’s club golfers.”
Hamish Grey, chief executive officer, Scottish Golf Union added, “The club members are the lifeblood of our game and the Magners Scottish Club Golfers Championship will provide a showcase national event for golfers at all levels. We are delighted that Magners has extended its sponsorship with the SGU and its support will be invaluable in augmenting our strategy of supporting our clubs and giving something back to the members.”
