Cracking down on counterfeit goods

12.20am 17th March 2006 - Corporate

MarkMonitor®, the leader in online corporate identity protection, has announced that TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company (TMaG) has chosen MarkMonitor’s Auction Monitoring™ solution to combat the sale of counterfeit TaylorMade golf equipment and to police infringement of other intellectual property on eBay. The move to incorporate MarkMonitor’s Auction Monitoring reflects TMaG’s confidence in the ability of MarkMonitor’s sophisticated end-to-end detection and response technologies to continuously monitor and identify instances of online fraud and illegal activity.
When it came to TMaG’s attention that increasing numbers of counterfeit clubs were being offered on eBay as authentic TaylorMade clubs, TMaG sought a solution to improve its auction monitoring capabilities.
“Before MarkMonitor, we were forced to rely on our employees to manually spot suspicious activities on online auction sites. That method of enforcement, which we‘ve been using for some time now, is difficult and tedious,” said Steve Crocker, patent attorney at TMaG. “MarkMonitor will provide insight into these issues as well as an ongoing analysis of, and protection against, infringements against the entire TaylorMade brand. Two key capabilities made MarkMonitor the obvious choice: its integrated case management, which enables us to make swift assessments and decisions via an intelligent scoring algorithm, and its automated alerts, which notify us when a suspicious online auction is in process and allows us to terminate problematic auctions in a matter of hours.”
The ability to monitor legitimate and counterfeit products on online auction sites using MarkMonitor’s comprehensive corporate identity management solution allows corporations to better protect their brand image. MarkMonitor’s solution includes its integrated suite of Domain Management™, Brand Protection™ and Fraud Prevention™ services including Auction Monitoring, which scans auction sites, identifies and prioritizes abuses and enables automated responses that permit swift, meaningful action on violations.
“As the Internet has begun to mature as a platform for eCommerce and online auctions, it’s also become vulnerable to issues that plague the physical world, such as fraud and identity theft. So, it’s imperative for corporations to take the same sort of action online as they would in an offline situation,” said Mark Shull, CEO of MarkMonitor. “The protection of brand identity is a crucial part of conducting business online. Our solutions are designed to protect global companies like TaylorMade Golf and ensure that the Internet is a safe place for business.”
