Sam Torrance was today unveiled as a new ambassador for golfing tourism in Scotland, as part of VisitScotland’s drive for the Ryder Cup 2014. Making the announcement prior to the Open at Royal Troon, Frank McAveety, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, said the potential for growth in this market is enormous.
Sam will work with VisitScotland to promote the Scottish golf product throughout the world, a business said to be worth £300 million to the Scottish economy. He joins Catriona Matthew, Kathryn Marshall and Steven O‘Hara, who already act as golfing ambassadors for VisitScotland playing on the USA and European circuits.
Scotland welcomes the Ryder Cup to the Home of Golf in 2014 and VisitScotland, its partners, Sam and the other ambassadors will maximise the promotional opportunities available from 2006 to make the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles the most successful ever. Details of the programme will be rolled out in the near future.
Tourism is one of Scotland’s largest industries. It employs 197,000 (9% of the workforce and 13% of the Highlands & Islands workforce) and it injects £4.5 billion annually into the Scottish economy (5% GDP).
Tourism pays the wages of more people than the oil, gas and whisky industries combined and employs over four times more than agriculture/fishing.
