Crete builds a reputation for golf

8.30am 16th April 2004 - Travel

Golf Marketing Services has been signed up to handle the marketing of the new Crete Golf Club. GMS will be looking after all the club’s advertising, marketing and PR requirements in the British and European markets.
Crete Golf Club is the first golf facility to be built on the picturesque Greek island where thousands of British and European tourists spend their summer holidays. It has been open for under a year but has already built a reputation as one of the finest new courses in the southern Mediterranean.
The new club is situated on a spectacular piece of land about 22 kilometres east of the Nikos Kazantzakis international airport at Heraklion and about seven kilometres south of the town of Hersonissos. Its 6,015 metre (6,616 yards) course was designed by Bob Hunt of the PGA Design Partnership and is best described as a classic desert layout similar to those found in quality resorts in Texas and Arizona.
Hunt’s new masterpiece features a series of outstanding holes and affords dramatic views over the rolling local landscape. Facilities also include a state of the art 40-bay covered golf academy and a palatial clubhouse. The mildest climate in the Mediterranean means that golf can still be enjoyed even in the height of the summer.
“We are delighted to team up with GMS to market what we believe is one of the finest new golf facilities in the whole of Europe,” said Harry Zervos, head professional at the Crete Golf Club. “It was only opened last summer but it is already is excellent condition and offers an enjoyable test for all standards of golfers.”
“We have no doubt that the Crete Golf Club has a real hidden gem on its hands,” said Phil Craghill, one of three directors at GMS. “It’s a marvellous facility and will soon put golf in Crete on the tourist map.”
The Crete Golf Club cooperates with more than 40 hotel partners who provide high quality accommodation and services in a number of resorts on the island. The guests of the Hotel Partners enjoy special discounts on green fees at the club.
