Somabay earns GEO Certified Status

10.17am 16th January 2025 - Environment & Sustainability

Somabay Golf‘s championship course has become the first in Egypt to be awarded GEO International Sustainability Certification.

The Hurghada-based venue is one of only four courses in Africa to gain GEO Certified status, reflecting Somabay’s commitment to sustainability and strengthening its position as a leading sports destination.

The GEO Certificate recognises golf courses which prioritise environmental responsibility, community values, and the enrichment of nature, values which Somabay Golf holds as part of its core ethos.

Sustainability is at the heart of the development of Somabay Golf, with indigenous, water-saving plants having been increasingly incorporated into the facilities. The 18-hole championship course, which was designed by Gary Player, was also recently relayed using Paspalum Platinum, which is tolerant to both salt and high temperatures, allowing for the reduction of water usage, whilst a new 5mw solar plant has also been implemented to reduce the destination’s carbon footprint.

In addition to the 18-hole course, other golf facilities on offer at Somabay include a floodlit par-3 course, a 5,000sqm short game area designed by James Edwards of EDI Design and Tim Lobb of Lobb & Partners, as well as a floodlit double-ended driving range.
