As 96 of the world’s longest hitters of a golf ball gathered at the Palms Golf Course in Nevada, USA for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship, one participant and one golf club withstood the sport’s ultimate test. Clayton Burger, relying upon his King Cobra driver, unleashed a dramatic 402 yard 5 inch blast on the last of his six allotted drives to become the second consecutive first-timer to win the men’s open division and its $80,000 first prize.
Under a clear, evening desert sky and calm conditions, Burger’s 402-yard drive marked just the second time in the event’s 29-year history when the winning drive exceeded 400 yards. Fellow King Cobra loyalist Jason Zuback was the first to achieve the milestone when he posted a wind-aided 412-yard effort in 1997 to win the second of his record-setting four consecutive titles. Burger also posted a 403-yard drive during the afternoon semi-finals that stood as the longest of the week in the Men’s Open division.
“This is just unbelievable, something I never expected to happen this fast,” said Burger “This King Cobra driver is the hottest I have ever hit. I look forward to a great relationship with Cobra and hope to continue improving upon my performance with its advanced technology equipment.” Burger captured the title with a King Cobra SS driver head with 4 degrees of loft.
A native of Texas, the 25-year old 6‘4″, 230lbs Burger is a former college baseball player and earned an exemption on the 2004 Long Drivers Association Tour and five-year exemption into the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship.
