With the support of the Golf Foundation, Community Services in North Lanarkshire Council have been awarded £26,000 Social Inclusion Partnership funding to bring golf to young people in South Coatbridge and North Motherwell, designated areas of social and economic deprivation.
The funding will enable 700 children, aged 8 to 9 years, to each receive 6 sessions of Tri Golf in 23 primary schools. Each primary school will receive a free Tri Golf bag and training for a member of staff or parent. All pupils will be registered on the Golf Foundation’s Junior Golf Passport scheme, attend at least one Tri Golf festival at a local sports centre and be offered the opportunity of free coaching with a local PGA professional as part of the Dunlop Starter Centre Initiative.
The initiative will also provide free access to the new Dunlop Loco range of golf clubs and free rounds of golf at local municipal facilities for all those participants who achieve the Start Golf level of their Junior Golf Passport.
Coordinating the initiative, Sports Development Officer, Jim Moffat said, “Through the Social Inclusion Partnership funding and excellent range of initiatives from the Golf Foundation, North Lanarkshire Council is able to provide a pathway of golfing opportunity for young people to progress from Tri Golf in school through to lessons with a PGA Professional and participation on a local golf course. All children will be given a variety of golfing goodies to keep. We hope to provide 700 young people with a memorable experience and the opportunity to continue in golf”.
In just over a year and in other areas, North Lanarkshire Council have already introduced over 1,000 children to golf through the Tri Golf Initiative in 26 primary schools and via 10 area festivals. 30 volunteers and coaches have been trained as Tri Golf Activators.
