Burhill Estates Ltd, owner of the Burhill Holf Club, has awarded the turnkey contract for its new 18 hole golf course to M J Abbott Limited of Salisbury. This announcement comes just a few weeks after the company revealed its £2.5 million plus development plans to take the club into the next millennium.

“We are delighted that Abbotts will be working with our close knit team here at Burhill,” said Paddy Mitchell, Managing Director of Burhill Estates Company Limited. “When we announced the development plans for the course and clubhouse we committed ourselves to hire the best possible people to take Burhill into 2000 and beyond.”

When Burhill Golf Club opened in 1907 there were two 18 hole golf courses but one of these was returned to farmland with the outbreak of the Second World War. Acclaimed golf course architect Simon Gidman, working in consultation with PGA European Tour Professional Gary Orr and Burhill Professional Lee Johnson, has been responsible for the design of the new course and developing it to championship standards. He will be working closely with M J Abbott to ensure that it will be one of the best golf courses in the area.

M J Abbott Limited was part of the team which recently completed re-modelling works to the “new look” Brabazon course at The Belfry as well as working on drainage and irrigation projects at Celtic Manor, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club in Ireland, Sunningdale and Royal St George’s.

“Burhill’s new course will be an interesting project for us as the original 18 hole course which was there pre World War II may unearth some surprises,” says Steve Briggs of M J Abbott Ltd. “The new course has been designed to complement the existing 18 holes at Burhill and will provide a great opportunity for us to replicate some of our past achievements.”

The Burhill Estates Company Ltd was established in 1926 and its portfolio includes Burhill Golf Club, Walton-on-Thames, Thornbury Golf Centre in Bristol, Birchwood Park Golf Centre in Kent, Ramsdale Park Golf Centre in Nottinghamshire and Hoebridge Golf and Snooker Centre near Woking in Surrey.
