Paul Lawrie wins Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship

Paul Lawrie claimed a wire-to-wire victory at the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship after firing rounds of 64, 71 and 70 at Trevose in Cornwall.

The 1999 Open champions’s 11-under-par total saw him finish three shots clear of fellow Scot Euan Mcintosh, with Englishman Simon Brown a further shot back in third.

The 53-year-old Aberdonian recorded his last Legends Tour victory in 2019 at the Scottish Senior Open at Craigielaw, and he was delighted to add to his tally of senior wins with the European Legends Links title.

“It’s always nice to win,” said Lawrie, who bounced back from a play-off defeat at last week’s Jersey Open. “Even though we’re a little older, we’re still competitive and we still want to walk away with the trophy at the end of the competition.  I played nicely all week – a little disappointed with the bogey at the finish, but apart from that, it was a solid week.”

The weather on the first day was ideal, with warm and pleasant temperatures and not a cloud in sight. Saturday and Sunday, however, saw very different conditions, including strong winds onshore winds, followed by heavy rain, which challenged the players and their golfing abilities, especially the amateurs.

The tournament produced even more memorable moments over the four-day event, with Champions (UK) plc, headed up by managing director Matthew Hayes, winning the Thursday Pro-Am tournament. Included in the team were Alistair Brown, Matt Norton and their professional golfer, Steven Dodd.
