Titleist staff player Justin Thomas had 14 Titleist clubs and the brand’s Pro V1x golf ball in his bag when claiming his second major title at the US PGA Championship.
Coming through a playoff against fellow Titleist staff player Will Zalatoris, Thomas closed with a round of 67 to come from seven shots behind on the final day to claim the season’s second major.
The 29-year-old American excelled across the board at Southern Hills, finishing tied second in greens in regulation (69.44%), fourth in proximity to the hole, and second in Strokes Gained: Putting (+6.313) on the demanding championship layout.
Thomas first put his Titleist TSi3 driver in play at the start of this year at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. When asked about his setup, Titleist’s Director of Player Promotions J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, said: “We were able to go up in loft to the 10-degree head by utilising the SureFit hosel in the D•1 setting (-0.75 degrees loft, standard lie), which allows him to hit those flighted shots we saw down the stretch Sunday, while still being able to control the spin when he hits the big ones.”
The world no.5 also had four Titleist SM9 Vokey wedges in play, hitting them to an average of 14 feet from 125-150 yards across all four rounds. When first putting SM9 in the bag, Thomas was focused on the control they gave him, saying: “For someone who likes to flight my wedges and control my spin a lot, I need to be able to see that ball hit the windows. I’m looking both low and high, but especially low. For me, it’s nice to be able to feel like I hit it and I don’t look up and it’s coming high and floaty.”
Titleist topped the Ball (62%), Driver (30%), Hybrid (34%), Utility Iron (43%), Iron (27%) and Wedge (44%) categories at the US PGA Championship.
Among the players who finished tied fifth or better, Titleist had six players who used the Pro V1 or Pro V1x ball, four who played the TSi driver, six using at least one Vokey Design SM9 wedge and four using a Scotty Cameron Putter.
Titleist’s sister brand, FootJoy, also enjoyed a good week at the PGA with Thomas, Zalatoris and third-placed Cameron Young all wearing FJ Premiere Series shoes during the tournament, including FJ’s limited-edition Todd Snyder collaboration released earlier in the week
