Not far from Copenhagen, The Scandinavian is a golf club where both sustainability and respect for nature and the environment are a key part of its values.
When irrigating the courses, only recycled rainwater collected from the areas surface is used avoiding the need for groundwater extraction that could strain the area’s natural water levels.
Like many others, however, The Scandinavian is impacted by climate change, meaning significantly less rainfall in certain periods and difficult conditions for storing enough rainwater. In cooperation with Allerød Municipality, therefore, an extensive reservoir system is now being created, which will both be able to collect additional rainwater and at the same time remove excess water from the newly established Farum District Heating.
The reservoir will contain 100,000 m3 of water. In this way, we ensure that all irrigation remains sustainable and is not a burden on nature and the environment.
The new reservoir is located on the northern part of the area and the establishment itself is done using the existing soil and clay, so there is no need to add artificial liners. In this context, The Scandinavian will simultaneously plant 4.8 hectares of new forest, which both safeguards and improves conditions for wildlife. The new forest is part of an extensive project being carried out by The Scandinavian in relation to the development of the forest in the area.
David Shepherd, CEO at The Scandinavian says: ‘Water is a finite resource all over the world- and we don’t want to compromise our values by using groundwater. However, we quickly realised that we need to add additional water to achieve our quality goals. At the same time, we agreed that if we were to add additional water resources, then this should be done in a sustainable way, and that is exactly what the new water reservoir does.
When we became aware of the possibility of contributing to Farum District Heating’s sustainable project, it was of course natural for us to cooperate on a common solution.
The importance of the new water reservoir is huge for our golfers and ensures that we can continue to deliver and improve the international quality level we want. In the case of the challenging climate change, this will also future proof our club in a sustainable way.
Our area is special with a varied and large wildlife. The new reservoir and the new forest area, together with the continued maintenance of the forests, will ensure that wildlife continues to have optimal conditions.’
Construction has now begun and the whole project is expected to be completed by the end of October. There will then be a period during which the reservoir must be filled with rainwater before it is fully functional.
