Swan Golf Designs has secured two new contracts in the Peoples’ Republic of China – in Shanghai and Zhengzhou – in association with the Anglo-Chinese consortium, St Andrews International Golf Developments. The practice anticipates being commissioned for a third contract, a 36 hole resort complex in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.
To support these projects the Practice, which is based in Essex and already has six architects, will expand the team. Bai Ding, a Chinese national with significant experience in golf course construction with the Beijing Pan China Sports Company, started to work with the Practice last month. He is attending the EIGCA Masters 2002/3 programme at Heriot Watt University, graduating next autumn.
To advance the firm’s work in China and the Far East it is likely that at this point Swan will open an office in China which will be staffed by EIGCA graduate Richard Myers and Bai Ding.
“Our professional work in China is increasing. We are privileged to have the chance to ‘pioneer’ in another part of the world which is relatively new to the game,” said Howard Swan. “We are happy to be able to stamp a European approach in China rather than see a continuing American expansion in the game’s development there.”
