The owners of The Point at Polzeath in Cornwall have appointed experienced golf club manager Carl Rutherford as its new managing director.
A qualified PGA coach, with extensive experience in the food and beverage industry, Rutherford brings with him vast experience, having held the position of managing director at Bearwood Lakes Golf Club in Surrey for the past 13 years. In his new role at The Point at Polzeath he will assume day-to-day responsibility across all areas of the business, working with the owners and the team to take the business to the next level and build on the foundations laid over the past five years.
Born out of the administration of Roserrow Golf and Country Club, The Point at Polzeath was purchased by Jeremy and Eva Davies, alongside Robert Clive and Mel Thomas, from 360 Golf in 2012. The team immediately set about investing across all areas of the business and have completely revitalised the resort, which located on the North Cornwall coast.
Commenting on the appointment, Jeremy Davies said: “Both my wife, Eva and I are thrilled to have attracted someone of Carl’s calibre, as it signals our intention to continue to improve our overall offering for the benefit of our members and guests. We have known Carl for over 20 years, and there is no doubt that he is held in very high regard within the golf industry. His knowledge and experience will be of great benefit and will also enable myself and Eva to focus on other areas of the business, where due to time constraints in the past, we have been unable to maximise opportunities.”
Rutherford added: “I am very excited to be joining the team at The Point at Polzeath, and am looking forward to helping Jeremy, Eva and 360 Golf build on the fantastic work they have already achieved reinventing this wonderful facility, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
“It really is an amazing venue, and somewhere that myself and my family know very well, having holidayed there on numerous occasions. The relaxed, family orientated environment that Jeremy and Eva have worked tirelessly to create has already proved to be a huge success and I consider it a privilege to be entrusted to help guide the club through the next stage of its evolution.”
Since purchasing the property, the owners have built seven state-of-the-art eco apartments, all offering views out to Pentire Point and the Atlantic Ocean. The main clubhouse has been extensively renovated, with a new sports bar and terrace, in addition to an upstairs restaurant, taking the club to a whole new level and cemented its position as one of the region’s most popular golf and leisure destinations. The Health Club has also seen continued investment, with an 18m indoor pool, large gym with 12 spinning bikes and a studio that hosts yoga and pilates classes all year round.
The golf course has recently undergone a sympathetic redesign under the guidance of world-renowned architect Tim Lobb, with the new-look layout recently playing host to the PGA Cornish Festival in conjunction with neighbouring courses at St Enodoc and Trevose. Work is scheduled to continue on the course this year, with a brand new 7th hole under construction, which is scheduled for opening in Spring 2020.
