TaylorMade has updated its TP5 golf ball range with two redesigned models that promise increased speeds off the clubface without affecting spin and flight control through the bag.
Both the new TP5 and TP5x balls feature a new ‘high-flex material’ inside the five-layer construction which enables a soft core to be wrapped by increasingly stiff materials, creating what the company is calling a ‘Speed-Layer System’, with each outer layer getting progressively faster. The spring-like characteristic of the flex material also increases the force on the driver face, further increasing the speed of the ball when it leaves the driver face.
Following recent testing, TaylorMade’s tour players have reported significantly increased balls speeds, with Jon Rahm (increasing his average ball speed with the driver from 178mph to 182mph. Noticeable gains were also achieved session across players with high, mid and lower swing speeds.
Both balls feature three-layer core, which consists of an large, low-compression inner core (16 compression in TP5 and 25 compression in TP5x) and a progressively stiffer outer core and mantle. The combination of the layers work in conjunction to create lower drag and increased carry, giving golfers of nearly every swing speed the chance to hit higher lofted clubs into the green.
The dual spin cover boasts a soft cast urethane outer cover and a 30% more rigid inner cover. This creates ideal conditions for greenside control, as the rigid inner cover forces the soft urethane cover into wedge grooves for maximum spin.
The outer cover has also been treated with a compound to improve scuff and shear resistance, while a new paint formulation increases overall durability.
While both balls deliver significant distance off the tee, the TP5 has a softer feel (85 compression), and launches lower on iron shots and has more spin around the greens (+300rpm compared to TP5x at 100 yards and +200rpm at 30 yards), while the TP5x has a firmer feel (97 compression) and will generate higher launching iron shots.
With an RRP of £49.99 per dozen, both balls go on sale from February 15.
