Two of golf travel’s most influential voices have heaped praise on Russia’s first PGA branded course.
Zavidovo PGA National Russia drew glowing reviews from Golf & Travel editor Vic Robbie and influential Golf Business News website owner Geoff Russell during a recent visit.
The duo’s presence heralds the start of a series of international media events designed to raise the resort’s profile as a new golfing destination for golfers looking for something different.
Robbie commented: “When you visit a PGA branded establishment you expect excellence and efficiency and Zavidovo PGA National Russia is no exception. This is a quality course that is enjoyable and challenging. Every hole demands accurate shot-making for the best results.
“The fairways have a links feel to them and the greens are large and undulating. The on-site hotel is five-star plus and all the staff at Zavidovo are welcoming and helpful.
“I am certain that Zavidovo PGA National Russia will play a major part in attracting golfers to Russia and helping to grow the game within the country.”
Russell was similarly impressed, adding: “Everything about Zavidovo PGA National Russia supports the claim that this is indeed a world-class facility.
“What started five years ago as flat, featureless farmland has been transformed by golf course architect Dave Sampson of European Golf Design into one of the most scenic new golf courses not just in Russia but anywhere.”
Club president Alexander Yarunin reflected on a first opening season for the course which has generated significant interest both in Russia and in wider Europe.
“With our on-site hotel opening next year we will be able to position ourselves as a golfing destination that will attract more tourists to the country as people look for alternative holiday offerings,” he said.
Guy Moran, head of property and development for The PGA, added: “Bringing Geoff and Vic to Zavidovo is one of the ways in which The PGA is providing continuous support to the facility and we hope it will help increase awareness of this world class course in Russia where knowledge and appreciation of golf continues to grow.
“It is also a source of pride to showcase a facility where the Director of Golf (Phil Jones) is a PGA Fellow Professional and the Head Professional (Nick Solski) is an Advanced PGA Professional.
“In addition the arrival of former Applied Golf Management Studies student Craig Brown as a teaching professional, further helps The PGA promote the skills and abilities of members as professionals in the business of golf.”
As part of the visit, The PGA presented the club with an annual Medal Series Trophy which will be played for by members and guests during the golf season.
