Two times Walker Cup captain and PowerPlay Golf creator, Peter McEvoy, visited Harrogate’s Rudding Park Golf on Thursday 30 July 2009 to showcase PowerPlay Golf –
the two flag ‘risk and reward’ game to a keen group of journalists and golfers.
The North Yorkshire golf resort has been chosen as an official PowerPlay Golf venue by Peter thanks to its first class golfing facilities and its two challenging courses; the 18 hole Hawtree Course and the new six hole Repton Short Course.
PowerPlay Golf is designed to be played over nine holes but Peter chose the six hole Repton Short Course as the location for his PowerPlay challenge. Peter said: “’Risk and reward’ is a key feature in PowerPlay so the Repton Short Course, with its contemporary six hole par three design and its interplay of water, woodland and parkland, provides the perfect setting for the game, as every shot counts.
“In short, the Repton Short Course so admirably suits PowerPlay Golf – its an absolute pleasure to play and so good for your game”.
Billed as ‘the new way to play golf’, PowerPlay Golf has attracted global acclaim from many of the world’s most famous golf-playing countries including Ireland, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and most recently, New Zealand.
In PowerPlay Golf, players can choose to play to the ‘easy‘ white flag or the more difficult ‘Skull ‘n‘ Crossbones’ black flag which is placed in a difficult location. If a birdie or better is scored when playing to the black flag, double Stableford Points are earned. Each golfer is compelled to take exactly three ‘PowerPlays‘ in the first eight holes. There is then the option of a fourth ‘PowerPlay‘ on the final hole but if a net bogey or worse is scored, two points are lost from the total score.
Rudding Park is independently owned by Simon Mackaness and his family. Over the last 30 years, they have carried out a comprehensive programme of improvement and redevelopment which includes the opening of Rudding Holiday Park in 1978, the renovation of Rudding Park House in 1987 and the subsequent opening of the 50-room hotel in 1997.
The estate also comprises an 18 hole, par-72 golf course set in mature Parkland, complemented by an 18 bay floodlit driving range and golf academy. A new development of 18 luxury holiday lodges adjacent to the golf course opened in May 2006 and a par-3 six hole short course opened in April 2008.
