Two weeks ago I described the eleven day period that began with Golf LIVE at London Golf Club in Kent, proceeded to the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club and concluded with the world’s first professional PowerPlay Golf tournament at Celtic Manor Resort as a ‘Big Time’ start to the golf season in Europe.
Not only was each one of those events superbly presented, they were also attended by even bigger crowds than had been expected.
The icing on the cake was the sight of Lee Westwood and Luke Donald going head-to-head for the honour of being ranked as the Number One Golfer in the World.
That’s two ENGLISHMEN! It’s like the time when in Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button we had two successive Formula One World Champions – wouldn’t it be nice if the media made as much fuss of Lee and Luke as they did (and still do) of Lewis and Jenson?
And if anyone is still sceptical about golf’s World Rankings just remember that among the players taking part in the BMW PGA Championship were the current holders of every single Major Championship. That in itself was golfing history. Luke and Lee beat them all.
What a great start!
