R&A Membership Decision Widely Welcomed

September 19th, 2014

News that The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is now a ‘mixed membership club’ has been widely welcomed. Out of the 2,440 members eligible to vote, 1,853 did so (75.9%) and 1,581 (85.5% of the valid votes) said ‘Yes’ in response to the question ‘Should women be admitted as Members of the Club.

The numbers are impressive and the decision to hold a postal ballot, rather than leaving it to yesterday’s scheduled Business Meeting, was obviously correct.

It is understood that up to 15 women will now be invited to join. It will be fascinating to see who they are.
