A great start for Open Week

A series of good news stories has got Open Week off to a brilliant start. Yesterday we heard that JCB’s plans for a new £30 million golf course in Staffordshire had been given a unanimous go-ahead by planners; this morning comes word from England Golf that over 110,000 people (aged 14+) got into golf in the year to the end of March 2014 (more than double the figure for the previous 12 months) while, in the media centre at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Tiger Woods confirms that first would be ‘an acceptable finish’ for him at The Open Championship this weekend.

Tiger’s very presence will send TV viewing figures through the roof. If he gets even close to winning another Major Championship this week, the numbers both here at Hoylake and via every broadcast channel in the world will be the best for years.
