Rory McIlroy’s runaway success at last weekend’s US PGA Championship would certainly have gained even wider media coverage had it not coincided with the Closing Ceremony of London 2012. The two remarkable records that he set that day are therefore worth repeating.
He became the second youngest player of the modern era to win two Major Championships – the youngest being Seve Ballesteros in 1980 – and his eight-shot victory broke Jack Nicklaus’s US PGA record for a winning margin by one stroke.
Ballesteros, Nicklaus and McIlroy – three great names in one sentence!
