The English Golf Union has joined forces with leading golf equipment brand Wilson to help develop the game of golf at grass roots level. As an incentive for golfers to join the EGU’s Associate Membership Scheme, sponsored by Prosimmon, every new member will receive three free Wilson Staff ‘Smart-Core Professional Distance’ golf balls.
Initially, the partnership between the EGU and Wilson is a one-year agreement that begins in April 2001.
Associate Membership, which was introduced in 1997, is available to both male and female golfers wishing to enjoy the chance to play courses normally closed to the non-handicap player, ultimately creating an easier pathway through to golf club membership.
For an annual subscription of £25, golfers also receive a handicap approved by the EGU or the English Ladies’ Golf Association; access to a special coaching package at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa; benefits covering insurance, holidays and merchandise; a quarterly newsletter; plus involvement in events exclusively for Associate Members.
“We are delighted that Wilson has such a positive outlook on grass roots golf,” said Paul Baxter, EGU chief executive, “and hope this partnership continues to grow in strength along with a scheme that opens up more golfing opportunities.”
Angus Moir, business director for Wilson Golf in Europe, said: “Wilson looks forward to working closely with both the EGU and the ELGA and hope that by investing in this initiative we will help more people to play golf on a regular basis and improve their game as well.”
