Wentworth sees record attendance

12.21am 26th May 2009 - Sponsorship & Events

Record crowds of 80,186, up 11,000 on 2008, basked in glorious sunny conditions to watch Paul Casey continue his fine form this season and claim victory at The European Tour’s Flagship event, The BMW PGA Championship with rounds of 69, 67, 67 and 68.

In his 172nd event on The European Tour, Casey fought off a strong charge from fellow Englishman Ross Fisher to claim his 2nd title of the year and 10th in total to move into pole position at the top of The Race to Dubai standings and Number 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

The €750,000 winners’ cheque moves the 31 year-old Englishman to the top of The Race to Dubai standings and to Number 3 in the Official Golf World Rankings, the highest placed Englishman since Nick Faldo back in 1996.

He also joins an illustrious list of players, including Ballesteros, Faldo, Montgomerie and Woosnam who have all won the BMW PGA Championship and World Matchplay title over Wentworth’s famed West Course.
