Time for another quiz

8.50am 25th February 2005 - Sponsorship & Events

The R&A Great Britain and Ireland Rules of Golf Quiz, supported by Rolex, is entering its eleventh year with even closer competition anticipated from the clubs taking part.
The Quiz, which tests club golfers‘ knowledge of the Rules of Golf, has repeatedly proved popular over the past ten years with over 500 clubs taking part each year. Winning clubs have come from locations as far apart as Lahinch on the West Coast of Ireland (2003), Banchory in the Scottish Highlands (2000), Lancashire based Wilpshire (1996 & 1997) and the most southerly of all, Hagley in Worcestershire (2002). The other winners since the quiz started in 1995 are Broadway (1995), Braehead (1998), Stone (1999 & 2001) and Glen (2004).
The Quiz gets underway in May and is run on an inter-club knockout basis, leading to Area Finals in September and Regional Finals in October. The six winning teams at the Regional Final then travel to St. Andrews for the Great Britain and Ireland Final on 27 November in The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
There are several thousand Quiz questions, which vary in difficulty from straightforward questions that are addressed to individuals to more probing questions, based on the “Decisions on the Rules of Golf” publication, addressed to the teams as a whole.
David Rickman, Director – Rules and Equipment Standards said, “The Quiz has proved most popular over the years with the questions designed to be challenging but not too difficult. We have found that the Quiz has not only stimulated interest in the Rules, but has also generated friendship between Clubs.”
Richard Cutler, sponsorship manager at Rolex commented, “Rolex is delighted to continue its support of the R&A Great Britain and Ireland Rules of Golf Quiz which is a natural complement to the company’s sponsorship of the Rules book itself. It is to be hoped that more clubs than ever will enter in 2005 to demonstrate their understanding of the rules which govern the game.”
The final will be held in the famous ‘Big Room‘ of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and the finalists will dine that evening in the club’s private dining room with overnight accommodation being provided in the 5 star Old Course Hotel in St Andrews. Golf is also offered to team members and captains during their visit to St Andrews.
Quiz prizes this year given by The R&A and Rolex, will include Open Championship season tickets as well as the honour of being Quiz Champions.
A selection of prizes which include 1,440 golf balls are also being provided by Titleist and Footjoy and these will be presented to the winning and runner-up teams at area finals and to the winning teams at each of the regional finals.
Details of the Quiz can be found on the R&A’s website, www.randa.org Golf Monthly will again promote the Quiz and carry editorial and results. All clubs in Great Britain and Ireland will be invited to take part. Entries close on 25 April 2005.
